Identifying a poisoning from clinical patterns

The team compared four machine-learning classifiers using 201,031 NPDS records from 2014–2018. The models distinguished eight selected drugs or drug classes with overall accuracy of 77–80%. This was a retrospective pilot restricted to single-agent exposures, not a validation of diagnosis in unselected emergency patients.

Deep learning for poisoning classification

Using the same NPDS period and eight single-agent exposure categories, the team tested PyTorch and Keras neural networks. Both achieved 83% overall accuracy. The study excluded polysubstance exposures and supplied a public code repository. Prospective clinical performance remains to be tested.

A clinical framework for a difficult overdose

A 2026 review proposes using bedside echocardiography to distinguish vasoplegia from cardiogenic shock in calcium channel blocker overdose. The authors describe treatment and reassessment pathways, and explicitly call for prospective validation. It is a proposed framework, not a validated clinical rule.

Comparing interpretable prediction methods

This NPDS study compared decision trees with other machine-learning methods for distinguishing biguanide from sulfonylurea exposures. The publisher’s contribution statement credits me with designing the study and performing machine-learning coding, alongside the team’s writing and revision work.

First and corresponding author; study design and machine-learning coding documented.

A sustained focus on aluminum phosphide

A systematic review of the epidemiology, toxicity and clinical presentation of aluminum phosphide poisoning. It is part of a longer research program on this pesticide. The 2012 management discussion should be read in its historical context.
